Just like fashion and music, workplace designs can go in and out of style. The open office floor plan was the ‘hot’ office trend of the 2000s. In an attempt to build a more collegial atmosphere, organizations replaced rows of cubes – and other setups designed for privacy – with open workspaces. And with the rise of laptops and cell phones, employees did not need to be confined to a single office, let alone a single seat.

The workplace is always changing, the customer’s needs are changing, so are the skills required to get work done.

These are 5 of the in-demand skills you should have to be able to stay on top of your game at work, and also be in demand by top firms looking to hire professionals that will move their business forward.

1. Data science and Big data.

Data is everywhere and is found in huge and exponentially increasing quantities. Data science as a whole reflects how data is discovered, conditioned, extracted, compiled, processed, analyzed, interpreted, modelled, visualized, reported on, and presented regardless of the size of the data being processed. Big data is a special application of data science.

Data science is highly applicable to many fields including social media, medicine, security, health care, social sciences, biological sciences, engineering, defence, business, economics, finance, marketing, geolocation, and many more.

Big Data is essentially a special application of data science, in which the data sets are enormous and require overcoming logistical challenges to deal with them. The primary concern is efficiently capturing, storing, extracting, processing, and analyzing information from these enormous data sets.

Certification

Associate Certified Analytics Professional

The Associate Certified Analytics Professional (aCAP) credential is an entry-level analytics certification that shows education in the analytics process though the individual may not have practical experience yet. The certification focuses on the seven domains of the analytics process: business problem framing, analytics problem framing, data, methodology selection, model building, deployment, and lifecycle management.

Organization: INFORMS

Price: $300, though discounts may be available for INFORMS members

Cloudera Certified Associate (CCA) Data Analyst

A SQL developer who earns the CCA Data Analyst certification demonstrates core analyst skills to load, transform and model Hadoop data to define relationships and extract meaningful results from the raw output. It requires passing the CCA Data Analyst Exam (CCA159), a remote-proctored set of eight to 12 performance-based, hands-on tasks on a CDH 5 cluster. Candidates have 120 minutes to implement a technical solution for each task. They must analyze the problem and arrive at an optimal approach in the time allowed.

Organization: Cloudera

Price: $295

These are some of the popular and highly advanced certifications.

2. Network and information security (cybersecurity)

In one sense, information security dates back to when humans began keeping secrets; in the early days, physical files and documents were kept under literal lock and key. Once the business world began using computers, network security became essential to protect the electronic network infrastructure of these vital systems.

Cybersecurity is a subset of information security that deals with protecting an organization’s internet-connected systems from potential cyberattacks; and network security is a subset of cybersecurity that is focused on protecting an organization’s IT infrastructure from online threats.

Certification

Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Security

The CCNA validates that you have the applicable knowledge and hands-on skills to protect Cisco networks.

If your organization utilizes Cisco technology or you’re interested in developing your Cisco skills, the CCNA is a strong associate-level certification that can propel your Cisco security career forward.

The CCNA certification demonstrates your ability to:

· Recognize threats and vulnerabilities in a Cisco network

· Mitigate security threats

· Develop an effective security infrastructure

The CCNA certification establishes a strong foundation for job roles including network security specialist, network support engineer and security administrator.

Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)

The CISA certification focuses on information auditing. As an IT professional, being CISA-certified demonstrates that you have rigorous audit experience and are capable of managing vulnerabilities and instituting controls at an enterprise level.

Like its sibling test CISM, CISA requires applicants to have five years of experience before registering. Students learn about information systems control and monitoring skills, including:

· The process of auditing information systems

· IT management and governance

· Protection of information assets

A globally recognized certification, CISA is the main requirement for high-level IS audit, assurance and control positions.

3. Cloud computing

Cloud computing refers to a range of computing services that are available over the Internet and not stored on your computers or servers. Users pay for cloud-based services on an as-needed basis, whether it’s the amount of storage needed, the number of users of a software application, or the variety of services used.

There are three main types of cloud computing services:

· Infrastructure (servers, storage, and networking)

· Platform (databases, operating systems, and development tools)

· Software (applications)

The skills needed to manage cloud computing services fall into two buckets: The fundamentals that are an important part of everyday work and the more advanced skills that are part of larger IT projects and IT management. Here’s a look at these skills in more depth.

Certification

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional

Amazon Web Services launched its AWS certification program in May 2013. Currently, the program offers role-based credentials at the foundation, associate, and professional levels along with several speciality certifications. AWS certifications focus on preparing candidates for developer, operations and architect roles.

Our featured cert is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional certification, which targets networking professionals with two or more years of experience designing and deploying cloud environments on AWS. A person with this credential works with clients to assess needs, plan and design solutions that meet requirements; recommends an architecture for implementing and provisioning AWS applications; and guides the life of the projects.

VCP7-CMA: VMware Certified Professional 7 – Cloud Management and Automation

If there’s a contributing technology that enables the cloud, it must be virtualization, and nobody has done virtualization longer or from as many angles as VMware. The company’s newest cloud credential is the VCP7 – Cloud Management and Automation (VCP7-CMA) certification, based on vSphere 6.5 and vRealize, which recognizes IT professionals who can extend data virtualization throughout the cloud.

4. Internet of things(IoT)

The term IoT encompasses everything connected to the internet, but it is increasingly being used to define objects that “talk” to each other. “Simply, the Internet of Things is made up of devices – from simple sensors to smartphones and wearables – connected.

By combining these connected devices with automated systems, it is possible to “gather information, analyse it and create an action” to help someone with a particular task or learn from a process. In reality, this ranges from smart mirrors to beacons in shops and beyond.

Certification

Internet of Things: Cisco

The Cisco Learning Network offers IoT certifications, which are job role-based programs.

Under Cisco’s Industrial/IoT career track, you can earn CCENT and CCNA Industrial certifications. The training leans toward Internet Protocol (IP) networking expertise with automation, manufacturing and energy as focus areas, per their website.

IoT Professional Program: IoT-Inc.

Bruce Sinclair is the instructor of IoT-Inc. Certified IoT Professional (ICIP), which is for busy entrepreneurs, investors, engineers and developers. He’s a best-selling author on IoT, with a background in programming and marketing and holding CEO roles in various IT companies.

The program is three courses long, promising real-world case studies covering commercial, industrial, consumer and infrastructure IoT fields. In total, you’ll have to complete 45 modules in 163 lessons. Also, it has 28 quizzes, and you’ll take one final exam at the end of the course.

The online training is paid ($1,199), but free content is accessible on the website.

IoT is expanding and evolving as we speak. It has its share of challenges and opportunities that you can fill through further education.

5. UX/UI design

The “UI” in UI design stands for “user interface.” The user interface is the graphical layout of an application. It consists of the buttons users click on, the text they read, the images, sliders, text entry fields, and all the rest of the items the user interacts with. This includes screen layout, transitions, interface animations and every single micro-interaction. Any sort of visual element, interaction, or animation must all be designed.

“UX” stands for “user experience.” A user’s experience of the app is determined by how they interact with it.
